Chuck Update

Chuck, the service dog I raised prior to Fiona, is doing well!  I didn't share it here, but there was a possibility he was going to be career changed from his  life as a mobility dog.  Since he was a puppy Chuck would sometimes leak when resting.  It worsened as he grew and he was put on Proin which seemed to manage it well.  We were up front about Chuck's daily medicine and because of the cheapness of it he was matched a mobility dog.  Things were going fabulous until a few months ago when Chuck's leakiness reappeared and increasing his Proin did not help.

Miraculously several donors chipped in and Chuck had a surgery that had a chance of fixing the problem.  Thankfully the surgery worked and Chuck is eagerly back hard at work!

A link to a nice article is here.

Chuck Graduates!

Chuckles and his new mom are now an official team!  The graduation ceremony for Chuck and 14 of his friends was this past weekend.  We got to be reunited with Chuck before the ceremony and then walk him up the stage to hand him over to his momma.  Chuck has already been living with his new mom for almost 4 months as they have been diligently practicing their skills at home and out in public.

Most of his job involves retrieving.  He retrieves her crutches, her prosthetic leg, and things she drops.  Chuck also braces to help her get off the floor or out of a chair, and opens doors using the push plates.  And his absolute favorite task, and the one most helpful to his new mom, is tugging the laundry basket out of the closet, out the apartment door, down the hallway, and to the laundry room.  That is quite the distance!!!

Reunited!

Fiona and the Ferrets

Fi has always been in love with the ferrets and it seems as though she has finally won them over.  Opie will still bite her and refuse to let go at times (I always laugh as I walk over to rescue her!) but Zoe is falling in love.  I guess she just has a thing for labs as she's starting to do the same thing to Fiona as she did to Chuck.  It's just not quite to the same level as cuteness, yet.

I found this video I had made of Chuck and Zoe awhile back but never got around to uploading and posting it.  It almost makes me miss the Chuckles, almost.

I'm trying to get video of Fiona and Zoe but the lighting in our new place is horrible and of course it's made worse with a black dog.  You'll just have to take my word on the cuteness.

Chuck Update

Chuck has officially passed his public access test with his new momma and has moved into her home. Their move in was delayed a bit as she was moving from the third floor to the first to better be able to take care of her new dog. She is completely in love with Chuckles and I think Chuck loves her too. They will continue their training in the home over the next few weeks and will hopefully become a certified team soon with graduation in November.

While they were still in the earlier parts of their training I snapped a few pics of him in the yard with Fi

And then one day I had all 4 dogs in my cubicle.  Vito was thrilled.

Dethroned.

Chuck's xrays are good so we have 7 days left of the dude before he meets his client.  His parting gift to me is getting tapeworms.  Lovely.  My guess is he ate a baby bunny out in the yard :(

Chuck has met his replacement already.  He gives his seal of approval.

This is Fiona in orange.

She's asking Chuck for advice.  Or maybe trying to viciously dethrone him.

With a little help it is done.

Whew, Fresh bait!

Goodbye Chuck!

Well it's official.  Chuck has been matched with a client as a mobility assist dog pending the results of his xrays.  They will hopefully be starting work at the end of the month.

Good luck you big, dumb lab!

Puppyraiser Picnic

The boys went to the puppyraiser picnic yesterday for the service dog organization.

Chuck reunited with some of his sisters and a brother. Of course he had to be in front.
And had fun destroying a toy with 2 friends.

Vito was nuts.  Light screaming and whining as soon as we arrived.  He did calm down after I walked him around but quickly started up again when he saw dogs playing in a little fenced play yard.  I didn't want to let him join since I know how much he hates being jumped on by obnoxious labs but finally relented after 40 minutes of trembling and whining whenever we weren't moving.  Inside the play yard he immediately found a tennis ball and I let him obsessively approach people for a toss for about 5 minutes before I took him back out.  From then on he was relaxed as much as I can expect from him and was perfectly content to just chill.

Vito won a send out to a hulu hoop to sit in it, a short 10ft away.  He surprised me by responding to my away cue immediately as I haven't really done much work with him on it.  I thought Lance would do it no problem but apparently not.  He wasn't really focused and didn't move at all the first 2 cues.  Then he went out and veered off for a tree.  Finally he did 2 lovely ones.  With Chuck my plan was to tell him to retrieve and then interrupt with a sit since he doesn't have an away.  I thought it was going to work too until he just brought the hula hoop back.  The 2nd attempt I tried using a touch cue and then Chuck just went to eat some chalk in the grass.  Fail.

May Goals

I haven't made any goals the past few winter months but despite the little bit of snowflakes I saw this morning I'm hoping spring is here.

April progress:
- The little bit I did was trick training.  I am close to finishing up Chuck's limping and then quickly taught him to bow.
- Lance and I are still struggling with getting him to hold an object in his paws.  I think he understands the goal but is having a really difficult time holding the object tight enough without bringing his paws lower.  Of course if he lowers his paws the object falls.
-Also struggling with the back leg backwards limp.  Lance likes to grumble a lot at me when working on it :) Sometimes I've gotten up to 3 little steps backwards but mostly we have a hard time with 1.
- Vito hasn't done much.  Most of the time he's still not wanting to eat.  I've still done some work with training him to holding an object in his paws despite his unwillingness to eat the offered food.  Vito always begged with his paws straight in the air so had a hard time learning to balance with his paws down.  Doing better and is grabbing the object in close, but often he falls backwards :)  I also did a little work with duration with paw over the nose.

May Goals
1. Disc- Go out to the park at least once a week with Vito
2. Go outs- start really upping the distractions with Lance.
3. Tricks- I might stop the backwards limping thing with the corgi  but I do still want the hugging of a toy.
4. Depending on how Vito is doing with the meds I want to get back to practicing obedience exercises with him.  I just don't want to practice any of it if he's feeling flat.

Vito the pointer

Every evening the dogs work for their dinner.  Lance goes first or he starts trembling and is just pathetic.  Then Vito.  And well Chuck gets a little bit of training too.  But Chuck isn't as careful with his kibble as the others.  I guess that whale of a mouth he has just isn't as accurate as it would seem as kibble is always falling to the floor that he misses.  Once on the floor Chuck some how thinks it's a leave it even though I always release him to it.  Bless his tiny lab brain.

Vito watches our training intently.  But he is a good boy and just points to the lost kibble.  Usually I don't know we're missing one until I see Vito staring.
Lance would pounce on any kibble if he thought I wasn't looking.
But as soon as Lance knows that I too see the kibble he plays the eye contact game.
Lance will maintain eye contact no matter how much it pains him.
Vito needs a prompt.  And another one.  But then he'll make eye contact for a second.  Lance continues to plead

Sadly this is a post I did a few months ago but never published.  Vito's appetite still isn't back since he started his meds.  The past two weeks we have gotten to him eat most of is meals as we have switched foods for him. His weight isn't back up yet but at least he's not losing any more.  Perhaps he associated the old Clomipramine with his Taste of the Wild and that's why he refuses it.

Chuck at 12 months!

I finally compiled a video of the Chucklet from footage taken around his birthday.  I like how it actually makes me look like I train the dude.

Simple Joys

We got a new doggy bed and of course everyone was excited.

Happy Birthday Chuckles!

Chuck spent a good portion of his birthday in a crate at the agility trial.  But we made it up to him by giving him a pigs ear when we got home.

I swear I did not give him the pigs ear like that.

March Goals

February Progress:
Another lazy month.  I need spring to get here!!!  Did manage to get some work in but the majority of their dinners have been fed out of a dish.

1. Tricks- I wanted to continue Lance's work on holding a toy in his paws but instead I ended up working more on duration of his hind leg lifts.  I also restarted adding in nose targeting while holding his leg up in hopes of getting a hind leg limp.  I found it works better using a target instead of my hand for targeting.  I think Lance is really starting to get it!  He doesn't need my hand pointing to his back leg anymore and will hold it for several seconds.  Still a bit confused about the multitasking but is doing well.  Who knows if it will lead to limping though!

Vito I did a little work on the handstand but not much.  He just really wasn't into working for his dinner much this past month and was lacking energy.  He did learn how to flip on the low lightswitch at work.  Not a real one though, he's too short.

Chuckles I did actually free shape a trick without a prop!  At least the start of one.  We're working on limping with his front leg and are currently on duration of his front left paw while in a stand.

2. Scent articles- I did start work on them again although not as much as I'd like.  Lance has been stressing about them so I've gone back down to a really small pile and standing close by.  It seems to be helping and Lance is happier about them again.  Vito continues to have no issues with this at all.

3. Halts- No idea how to fix Vito's bumps into me.  Haven't worked on it since I don't have a plan.

4. Fronts with the db- Vito actually is coming in closer on his fronts with an object.  Not all the time, or even most of the time, but there are moments where I actually have what I want!  I don't know how since I haven't thought of any new approaches.  Still a major work in progress.

5. Gloves- I did work on them maybe once a week with Vito.  So far the shaking of the glove seems to have disappeared!!  We're working on really speeding up the return and fingers crossed it's eliminated that glove shake.

March Goals
1.  Running contacts and more running contacts.  I swear it's all I'm doing now.

2. I don't know.  I'm in a winter funk.  No more snow!

February Goals

I've been bad, it's already a week into the shortest month and I haven't thought about my goals at all.  I also rarely looked at January's goals so it's a wonder I accomplished anything at all.  I'm going to go ahead and blame Avery as that knocked out almost 2wks of training with the boys.

Chuckles wants a light.
January Progress
1.  Tricks- I wanted Lance holding a toy in his paws.  Well he can wrap his foot around a pole and can usually wrap his foot around a bottle if he's sitting so that's a semi hold.  He still cannot hold an object while begging though.

Vito's handstand- well if it's possible I think we are further behind now then we were before.  I started using my leg for something to aim for and now he's not lifting up very high without anything behind him.  He's still lifting off with both feet but it's a tiny hop vs a baby handstand.

Free shape a trick without a prop with Chuck- fail.  Did practically nothing with Chuckles, again.  I suppose I did start teaching him to rise up and drop an object on a table with a different plan of attack.  I'm now teaching it as more of an extension of cleanup- put one object on/in another.

2. Scent articles- well I did break them out and did them a few more times in January.  Pretty sure I didn't make my measly goal of twice a week though.

3. Halts- Eh.  Didn't work on Vito bumping me at all.

4. Fronts with the DB- I did try and get a closer front with Vito but am not finding a plan that works for him.  Vito still rocks back on his front when he has an object and while it's not far it's not what I want.  I'm trying to get him to do scootch sits with the dumbbell/any object and it's just not working.  I can get him to thrust an object into my hand that is held against my body but even after he gives me the object he'll rock back again.  I always make him scootch forward to get the treat.  He has VERY close fronts without an object so I don't know why I can't get it with an object.

February Goals
I suppose I'll keep the same as January's and try and work them a bit more.  I think I'll add a #5
5.  Vito Glove retrieves- I discovered Vito likes to shake the glove immediately after pickup.  Thanks to some great advice on the Clicker Comp Obedience list I had great success with eliminating the shake by speeding up the return.  However I really did not spend much time on this and need to make it more of a priority.

A one lab limit!

The past week and a half we have been fostering little Avery.  Avery is another service dog in training whose official puppy raisers didn't want to pick up until they turned in their current dog for final training.  She just turned 16wks.

Having two labs in my little rented basement is just ridiculous!  At first we left Chuck in the kennels so we wouldn't have 4 dogs, 5 ferrets, and the cat in our little space.  Dealing with a puppy was work but it wasn't too bad.  Vito wouldn't come off the couch as the floor was dangerous with a puppy afoot; Lance was a bit more tolerant but still had quiet the evil faces going.

But then we brought home the Chuckles who was overjoyed to have his very own puppy!  Chuck can not bare to be separated from his puppy and follows her everywhere. They are constantly playing or running around together and just causing chaos!  Even when napping they must curl up near each other.  It is so cute it is sickening!

Chuck likes to grab a nylabone, walk over to Avery, and lay down with her while she chews on the end sticking out of his giant jaws.  They will do this for serveral minutes and Chuck will even move the nylabone around in his mouth so that it sticks out whatever side Avery is on if she moves a bit!

Never again will I have 2 labs in the house at once!  Just don't tell Chuckles that she leaves tomorrow...

Training wise I just love having a puppy though!  They learn so fast and have no expectations of how things are supposed to work!

A ferret and her lab

Zoe is in love.
She loves to cuddle with Chuck.  But I'm not sure the feeling is mutual.
Zoe will nibble on his ear.  Or hang off his lip.

Frog legs

This is Chuck's favorite toy.

Frog leg.  It used to belong to his favorite frog, now it's just his favorite foot.  Chuck often carries it around his mouth so that you can only tell he has something because his jaws don't shut.

He likes to taunt Vito with it.  It's pretty easy to do, anything possibly throwable or tuggable grabs Vito's attention.  But often it backfires since as soon as Vito gets it he runs over to the couch where Chuckles can not go on.

After pouting for a bit Chuck will go and grab another toy to try and trade it for his favorite frog leg.

It always fails.  But since Vito wants the toy thrown he will get a 2nd chance.
Chuck always loses in the race.  But today I am mean and make Vito practice eye contact games.  Very tough for the toller.

And the hungry lab strikes while Vito looks on in horror.
